Beyond The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Ideas that integrate art and science

I was surprised to learn that Eric Carle has written over 40 books! In researching an upcoming workshop combining the art of Eric Carle with Science, I fell in love with the beauty of the illustrations and profound messages the books contained. They inspired questions and further inquiry. Here are some ideas for you to share with your students.

The Little Cloud-
  • Can you make a cloud with cotton balls and paint. What do you see in your cloud?
  • What are the 3 types of clouds?
  • How did the little cloud change?
The Grouchy Ladybug-
  • Can we make a sundial that will tell time?
  • What is happening to the sun throughout this book?
  • Why was it good for the ladybug to eat the aphids?
Other books that inspired wonderful projects, art and inquiry include The Mixed up Chameleon and Papa Please get the Moon for me.  While I didn't read all 40 of his books in print,  each one is a gem and brought many hours of pleasure, surprises and new ideas to share with my students.
