December is always such a busy time for teachers between the shorter month and the holiday events
and projects. I always enjoy the fact that by December, preschool children have settled into the routine
of school and are ready for new challenges. Along with the traditional holiday songs and activities, here
are some untraditional ones that are fun to do and challenge brains and bodies, as well!
1. Please pass the Peas!
With all the holiday celebrations this is a good way to help children work on their manners! It is a version of “Hot Potato” that also emphasizes eye contact and sharing! Check out the song: Please Pass the Peas, and pass a green beanbag around a circle without dropping it!
2. Backwards Day!
Check out Boots by Laurie Berkner and add some backwards and forwards stomps jumps and dances. Also try to do “Head Shoulders, Knees and Toes” backwards. It’s hard! I also like to do an opposite “freeze dance” When the music stops you say High, and the kids must to the opposite, (make a shape that is low).Try with High, Low, Happy Sad, Straight, Curved, etc.
3. I like my hat!
As the weather is colder, the song, I like my hat, by Carole Peterson is a great way to teach body recognition and to segue into a discussion about warm winter clothes. I do this one using a beanbag as a hat!
Squeezing these fun activities into your day will help keep your students focused and challenged! Enjoy!
